Four veteran journalists named fellows under the 2nd HKBU Professional Journalism Fellowship

The School of Communication at Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) announces the selection results of the 2nd Professional Journalism Fellowship (PJF@HKBU) scheme. Four veteran media professionals from three media outlets in Hong Kong were selected as this year’s fellows. They have an average of over 20 years of solid journalism experience.

Supported by the Dorothy Shen Wong Memorial Fund, PJF@HKBU is the first-of-its-kind in Hong Kong which aims to raise the standards of journalism by allowing practising journalists to take a break from work to enrich their knowledge through studying at HKBU.

Under the scheme, the four selected fellows will study as full-time students for one semester in the upcoming academic year (2023-24), and they can attend any courses at the undergraduate or postgraduate level as auditors with the prior approval of the course instructors. The four newly selected fellows are Mr Wu Jiangchuan, BBC News Chinese Senior Broadcast Journalist and Editor; Mr Arthur Hung Kam-fat, Managing Editor (International News) of Ming Pao; Mr Alec Chan Tze-ling, Greater Bay Area Desk Bureau Correspondent of Ming Pao; and Mr Victor Lee Wai-tat, Assistant Managing Editor of TVB News & Information Services Division.

The fellows are all highly appreciative of the precious opportunity to return to the campus and pursue their studies again, and look forward to dedicating themselves fully to the learning and exchange activities. Through enhancing their professional knowledge and skills, they hope to contribute not only to their respective news organisations but also to the entire journalism industry in Hong Kong. The Chair of the PJF@HKBU selection committee, Professor Raymond Li, Professor of Practice and Head of Department of Journalism at HKBU, said: "We are delighted to welcome another batch of senior journalists on campus. We look forward to their sharing of frontline work experiences with our faculty members and journalism students, inspiring the younger generation to join the media industry."

Professor Raymond R Wong, who initiated and funded PJF@HKBU, said: "The news industries in Hong Kong and beyond are facing significant changes and challenges brought about by new technologies such as artificial intelligence. Therefore, I hope these fellows can utilise the time on campus for reflection and preparation, and equip themselves to face the future challenges."

Professor Raymond R Wong is the recipient of HKBU’s doctorate degree in Social Sciences, honoris causa, and Honorary University Fellowship. He is also an Honorary Permanent President of the HKBU Foundation. He was Head of the Department of Communication of the then Hong Kong Baptist College in the 1970s, and Principal Lecturer of the School of Communication in the early 1990s. Professor Wong has devoted over five decades to the journalism industry and media education and is known as the "Godfather of Journalism". He was awarded the Silver Bauhinia Star by the Hong Kong SAR Government in 1998. In 2020, he generously donated HK$ 50 million to establish Dorothy Shen Wong Memorial Fund in memory of his late wife, supporting the strategic development and journalism education at the School of Communication. It is the largest single gift donation ever received by the School. PJF@HKBU is one of strategic initiatives launched in 2022 supported by this Memorial Fund.
