HKBU launches Asia-Pacific Journalism Review

The Institute for Journalism and Society under the School of Communication at Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) has launched the first edition of the Asia-Pacific Journalism Review (APJR) today (July 15, 2021).

The APJR is a bilingual professional publication, and the team behind the periodical aim to publish it every four months. It has a number of regular sections and each issue will feature articles by heavyweights in journalism.

The inaugural issue includes a special feature on fact-checking in Greater China, with contributions from fact-checking teams in mainland China, Taiwan and Hong Kong. Prominent US journalism scholar Professor Michael Schudson, author of Why Journalism Still Matters, has also penned the first guest article for the publication.

The APJR will also interview outstanding practitioners who have had a lasting impact on journalism. Dr Raymond R Wong, who is known as the “godfather” of journalism in Hong Kong, was interviewed for the first issue. “Letter to Young Journalists” is a platform where outstanding personalities from different walks of life are invited to engage with budding journalists. The first letter has come from Mr John Chen, a prominent novelist in the Chinese-speaking world. Other sections include dialogue with editors, film review, book review and industry trends.

Professor Lau Chi-kuen, Head of Department of Journalism at HKBU, said: “The Department of Journalism strives to nurture journalism practitioners, and it aims to provide a platform for the exchange of ideas and views among them. The Asia-Pacific Journalism Review aims to become an influential professional journalism publication, and we hope that it will lead the local news industry to further connect with the Asia-Pacific region.”

Mr Raymond Li, Associate Professor of Practice of the Department of Journalism at HKBU cum the editor of the APJR, said: “The APJR will track the latest journalism trends around the world, particularly in the Asia-Pacific region, and analyse the coverage of major news events, study theories of journalism, etc, to provide an open platform for the news industry in the region.”

The APJR can be found online (apjrhk.org) and on various social media platforms (Facebook@apjrhk; Twitter@ApjrEditors; Instagram@apjrhk). Besides, the School of Communication will publish Global Storytelling: Journal of Digital and Moving Images soon. It has also been running Communication and Society with The Chinese University of Hong Kong since 2006.
