HKBU presents premiere gala of My Prince Edward
with alumna and director Norris Wong sharing her creative journey

The Academy of Film (AF) at Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) presented the premiere gala of the film My Prince Edward on 11 June 2020 (Thursday).

The event also featured a post-screening sharing session with Miss Norris Wong Yee-lam, the director of the film and an HKBU alumna, producer Mr Chan Hing-kai, together with the cast of the film. During the session, Norris and the cast shared the film’s creative journey with HKBU teachers, students and alumni as well as industry professionals.

The premiere was held at the UnionPay IMAX of the K11 Art House in Tsim Sha Tsui. Dr Clement Chen, Chairman of the HKBU Council and Court; Professor Roland Chin, President and Vice-Chancellor of HKBU; and Professor Eva Man Kit-wah, Director of AF, also attended the event.

Director Norris Wong is a 2012 graduate of HKBU’s Master of Fine Arts in Film, Television and Digital Media programme. My Prince Edward, distributed by Golden Scene Company Limited, is her debut feature film. Set in Golden Plaza, a shopping mall well-known for an abundance of bridal shops and budget wedding supplies in the Prince Edward district, the film explores the pressure on women to get married in modern society.

Norris has won several prestigious awards for the film, including the Best New Director award at the 39th Hong Kong Film Awards and the NETPAC Award, which was co-presented by the Taipei Golden Horse Film Festival and the Network for the Promotion of Asia Pacific Cinema. In addition, the film was given the Best Screenplay and the Recommended Film awards by the 26th Hong Kong Film Critics Society. Norris was also named the Best New Director by the Hong Kong Film Directors' Guild.

Professor Eva Man congratulated Norris on the success of My Prince Edward and added that she was delighted to see talent flourishing in the local film industry. She said: “Norris’s feature film debut has been a huge success. Teachers and students of the Academy of Film are proud of her achievements as a promising young director. I am very happy to see that the passion, creativity and efforts of talented students nurtured by HKBU for the film industry over the years have been well recognised. The Academy will continue to provide an excellent education in the cinematic arts and creative media, and this focus will enable us to nurture more outstanding film talent for the industry.”

My Prince Edward was one of the winning entries in the Higher Education Institution Group at the 4th First Feature Film Initiative (FFFI), and it received funding from the Government’s Film Development Fund to support its production. Norris is the third AF alumni to have won the award. The other two are Mr Steve Chan, a 2012 graduate who won the inaugural FFFI with Weeds on Fire, and Ms Oliver Chan, a 2015 graduate who won the 3rd FFFI with her film Still Human. Between them, they fully demonstrate the creativity and strength of HKBU’s talented filmmakers.
