Background of Mr Chang Kuo-sin and the CKS Award
With his multi-faceted skills in many areas other than the field of communication which he applied himself to, Mr Chang Kuo-sin made notable contributions to the community that were marked by his absolute devotion to integrity.
From 1978 to 1985, as head of the Department of Communication of the then Hong Kong Baptist College, Mr Chang conceived and championed the idea of “Truth is Virtue”. Subsequently adopted by the School of Communication — the successor to the Department — as its motto, the phrase still retains its power to inspire. When Mr Chang passed away on 2 February 2006 at the age of 89, he left a legacy that has few parallels.
The Chang Kuo-sin Award for Aspiring Young Communicators and the Chang Kuo-sin Journalism and Communication Education Fund were set up by HKBU School of Communication and its alumni in 2006. The Fund presents awards in memory of distinguished journalist, film-maker, commentator and educator Chang Kuo-sin. The Award aims at recognising the works of young people in the fields of journalism and communication that reach the highest professional standards, exemplify the “Truth is Virtue” philosophy and display a high degree of originality.
