Communication Studies Professor Zhou Shou awards Health and Medical Research Fund
Congratulations to Professor Zhou Shuo from the Department of Communication Studies in our School, for securing funding in the latest round of the Health and Medical Research Fund (HMRF) by the Health Bureau.
As an expert in communication and behavioural analytics, Professor Zhou received this grant for her outstanding research project,
“Build Machine Learning Models to Predict Suicidal Thoughts and Examine the Feasibility of Using Just-in-time Adaptive Interventions
for Suicide Prevention”. This initiative is a collaborative effort with Lan Liang from the Department of Interactive Media within
our School, Shao Jing from the Academy of Language and Culture in the HKBU Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences .
Recognising the limitations of existing suicide prevention methods, Professor Zhou plans to develop machine learning models using linguistic, cognitive, emotional, and behavioural data to predict suicidal thoughts and assess real-time adaptive interventions. A key objective of the project is to create a mobile app for data collection and to establish a scalable suicide prevention framework.
The HMRF aims to build research capacity and to encourage, facilitate, and support health and medical research that informs health policies, improves population health, strengthens the healthcare system, enhances healthcare practices, advances standards and quality of care, and promotes clinical excellence through the generation and application of evidence-based scientific knowledge derived from local research in health and medicine.
