Officiating at the ceremony were Mr Ng Chi-keung, Executive Director of the Efficiency Unit of the HKSAR Government, and Mr Lam Kin-hung, Project Coordinator of Seeds Project and Senior Lecturer of HKBU’s Academy of Film.

The theme of this year’s Seeds Project is “Travel through the images with your imagination”. Speaking at the kick-off ceremony, Mr Lam encouraged the participating students to try something new when they are still young and think outside the box to create more ingenious possibilities.

A masterclass was held on the same occasion with members of the production crew of the film Weeds on Fire as guest speakers, including Scriptwriter Mr Wong Chi-yueng and artiste Mr Sham Ka-ki. They shared their experience and valuable insights into film creation and production techniques with the audience.

Weeds on Fire is one of the two winning film projects in the Higher Education Institution Group of the 1st First Feature Film Initiative organised by CreateHK. The winning team received full funding from the Film Development Fund to make their first commercial feature film. This debut film was commercially released in Hong Kong last year and won popular acclaim. Actor Mr Tony Wu Tsz-tung was also nominated for Best New Performer at the 53rd Golden Horse Awards for his performance in Weeds on Fire.

Under the 6th Seeds Project, seven filmmaking workshops and the Digital Short Video Competition are now open for application. All local secondary students are welcome to submit entries by forming production teams from the same or different secondary schools. There is no restriction on the topic. The deadline for submission of entries is 4 May 2017.

The Seeds Project aims at nurturing the creativity of secondary school students and enhancing their aesthetic appreciation and artistic knowledge. It also aims to enable them to understand the film and video production industry and provide them with a platform for interaction and exchange. Since its first edition, the Project has been sponsored by CreateHK. The 6th Seeds Project will last for about seven months with a range of activities including a series of workshops, a digital short video competition, and industry and tertiary experience activities.
