Note of Condolence to Chang's Family

05 February 2006

Dear Mr. Chang:

It's with a heavy heart that I write this note upon hearing that your father had gone home to be with the Lord on February 2.

Professor Chang and I had been colleagues in the Communication Department (now School) of then Hong Kong Baptist College (now University) for some seven years, from 1970 to the end of 1976.

Kuo–sin was not only a close colleague and friend, but also a role model for me in his care and concern for his students. As I'm sure you'd discovered through the years since his retirement and settling down in California and Oregon, in how very high esteem that his former students continued to hold him .

The last time I saw Kuo–sin was when your Mom and he returned to Hong Kong, must have been three, four years ago, and our former students threw a dinner in honor of the first three department heads, Professor Timothy Yu, Kuo–sin and me. All of us, the teachers, their spouses and the students, had a very good reunion, though none of us even then was getting any younger. I myself finally retired from being a broadcast news director and general manager nearly two years ago, at the ripe old age of 66. I returned to the University as a Distinguished Fellow last August to mentor students and advise the faculty on a voluntary, part–time basis.

I understand the alumni are setting up a memorial scholarship in Kuo–sin's name. I cannot think of a a more appropriate tribute for your father as the welfare of students had always been the core of his teaching philosophy.

Please convey Mrs. Wong's and my condolences to your Mom, your siblings and all of the family.

Yours sincerely,

Raymond R. Wong
