Seven Pulitzer Prize winners share their experience at HKBU workshop

The 6th Pulitzer Prize Winners Workshop, organised by the Journalism Department of the School of Communication from 27 October to 1 November, has invited seven winners of the US media industry’s most prestigious award, the Pulitzer Prize, to share their experiences, wisdom and philosophies on their individual journalism journey and insights on their areas of expertise with University members, media professionals and the public.

The seven Pulitzer Prize winners visiting HKBU this year are Professor David Boardman, Dean of the School of Media and Communication at Temple University in Philadelphia, USA and member of the 2012 winning team for Investigative Reporting; Mr Chris Hamby, 2014 winner for Investigative Reporting; Ms Anne E Kornblut, member of the 2014 winning team for Public Service; Mr Kurtis Lee, member of the 2013 winning team for Breaking News Reporting; Mr Ewen MacAskill, member of the 2014 winning team for Public Service; Mr Steve Sack, 2013 winner for Editorial Cartooning; and Ms Inga Saffron, 2014 winner for Criticism.

Officiating at the Opening Ceremony on 28 October were Mrs Doreen Chan, Treasurer of the HKBU Council and Court and Mr Andy Lee, Acting President and Vice-Chancellor. Mrs Chan said the Workshop would prove to be yet another shining example of HKBU joining hands with the industry and the community at large in realising projects of social relevance, and in turn help promote journalistic excellence which is vital to an open and free society.

Following the Ceremony, the seven winners participated in a forum on “The Public's Right to Know Versus National Security”, sharing their views on the delicate balance between national security and the public’s right to know. In his opening speech at the forum, Professor Huang Yu, Dean of the School of Communication, encouraged the students, as future journalists, to listen, think and formulate views that support the truth and public good so as to prepare them for future decision-making.

During their time at HKBU, the seven winners have been taking part in a series of open lectures to share their insights about the role and challenges facing journalists in the fast-paced and ever-changing world of the 21st century. Please visit http://ppww.hkbu.edu.hk for more information.

The Pulitzer Prize Winners Workshop, a unique initiative in Asia, was first launched in 2006 by HKBU. Every two years, four to eight Pulitzer Prize winners are invited to the HKBU campus for a week of academic exchange to enhance the quality of journalistic education and global vision among professional journalists.
