School of Communication recognises nine aspiring young communicators at its 3rd Chang Kuo-sin Award

The School of Communication presented nine awards at its 3rd Chang Kuo-sin Award for Aspiring Young Communicators Award Presentation Ceremony yesterday (3 October) to recognise distinguished young communicators in the fields of journalism, creative audio-visual production and commentary whose work demonstrates the highest professional standards, exemplifies the philosophy "Truth is Virtue", and displays a high degree of originality.

Officiating at the ceremony were Mr. Michael Wong, Director of Information Services, HKSAR Government; Mr. Chang Chi-wu, son of Mr. Chang Kuo-sin; and Professor Albert Chan, President and Vice-Chancellor, HKBU.

Mr. Michael Wong paid tribute to HKBU for running some of the best courses in the communication arena for students at different levels for decades. He said: "This award is another testament to the commitment and leadership of the University on this important front."

Mr. Wong shared that a better way to communicate in day-to-day life is to simply convey, as squarely and fairly as we can, the facts as they stand, to explore common ground and values, and to discuss shared aspirations and goals. This type of communication could help bring about a win-win solution that benefits different stakeholders.

In his speech, Mr. Chang Chi-wu expressed his gratitude to HKBU and its alumni for their support since 2007 in setting up The Chang Kuo-sin Award for Aspiring Young Communicators and the Chang Kuo-sin Journalism and Communication Education Fund in memory of his father. Mr. Chang said "Truth is Virtue" was the motto that his father formulated for the Department of Communication of HKBU.

He said: "Students, I hope you will uphold the spirit of 'Truth is Virtue' in the future, and remain courageous, conscientious, and have the wisdom to differentiate between what is real and what is not. In addition, you should be sincere and genuine in dealing with people and in your career in order to promote the spirit of 'Truth is Virtue'."

Speaking at the ceremony, Professor Albert Chan said that this year's competition received entries from an even more diverse group of contestants than the last one in 2009. Their backgrounds included university students and communication practitioners in the creative communication and media fields. The overall quality of the entries was also higher.

Professor Chan thanked contestants for their participation, the judges for their professional adjudication, and staff from the School of Communication for their efforts in promoting and cultivating a spirit vital to the social development of Hong Kong. In addition, he expressed his gratitude to the Chang family for their support of both the Award and the Chang Kuo-sin Journalism and Communication Education Fund.

First launched by the School and its alumni in 2007, the Award was set up in memory of Mr. Chang Kuo-sin (1916-2006), a distinguished journalist, filmmaker, commentator and educator. Mr. Chang was head of the Department of Communication (now School of Communication) of the then Hong Kong Baptist College from 1978 to 1986. To commemorate the various aspects of Mr. Chang's career, prizes are awarded for substantive work in three categories: Journalism, Creative Audio-visual Production, and Commentary.
