HKBU students scoop three awards at computer animation competition

Dr. Kineta Hung, Associate Professor of Communication Studies of the Three School of Communication students recently scooped three awards in the Cross-boundary Anti-corruption Computer Animation/Comics Competition – a gold award in the tertiary student category, a regional grand prize and the most creative award. The students were Tsui Tsz-hoi, Lam Wang-chak and Choi Ting-fung (Digital Graphic Communication, Year 3).

Their award-winning 3D computer animation entitled "Defending our homeland with integrity" tells a metaphoric story. A forest is invaded by a glutton worm. Animals living in the forest react differently. Some suffer silently while others choose to avoid it. Ultimately all the animals have to pay a price as the glutton worm becomes more invasive. The story conveys the message that corruption should not be tolerated.

Wang-chak said he was responsible for making 3D models and the lighting while his two classmates were responsible for storytelling. He said: "We are honoured to receive the awards. We didn't think we would win because there were so many entries. We are particularly excited to win the most creative award because it was judged by the public. That our work and the message it contained received affirmation means a lot to us. We have to thank our advisor, Dr. Kelvin Lee, Senior Lecturer of the Communication Studies Department, for his guidance."

The competition was jointly organised by the Hong Kong Independent Commission Against Corruption, Guangdong Provincial People's Procuratorate and the Commission Against Corruption of Macao. It welcomed entries in three categories – secondary students, tertiary students and an open category – and attracted over 3,100 submissions from youngsters from Hong Kong, Guangdong province and Macao.
