Graduates of HKBU's Academy of Film win three prizes at Global Chinese Universities Student Film and Television Festival Awards

The 9th Global Chinese Universities Student Film and Television Festival Awards organised by the Academy of Film of the School of Communication was held last week. The event, which has been successfully positioned as "the University Oscars" in the Chinese-language community, attracted 76 entries from 44 universities competing for 13 awards. HKBU won the largest number of awards with graduates of its Academy of Film claiming a total of three awards.

The Festival was opened on 25 April by Professor Albert Chan, President and Vice-Chancellor; Mr. Cheung Tung-joe, chairman of the panel of judges; Professor Ringo Ma, Acting Dean of the School of Communication; and Professor Cheuk Pak-tong, Director of the Academy of Film of the School of Communication. This year, the event attracted more than 80 film school teachers and students from the Greater China Region, the United States, the United Kingdom, Poland, the Czech Republic and Korea to HKBU for exchange and sharing.

The award presentation ceremony was held on 27 April at the Asia Television Limited (ATV) headquarters. The officiating guests were Mr. Wilfred Wong, Council and Court Chairman and Chairman of the Hong Kong International Film Festival Society; Professor Franklin Luk; Mr. Simon Suen, Chairman of SML Group; Mr. Kwong Hoi-ying, Senior Vice President of ATV; Mr. Ng See-yuen, Chairman of the Federation of Hong Kong Filmmakers; and Professor Cheuk Pak-tong.

Mr. Wilfred Wong thanked Mr. Simon Suen for donating HK$300,000 to sponsor the festival and others for supporting the event. He said HKBU would continue to strive for excellence and nurture more talent for the film industry in Hong Kong and the Greater China Region.

Mr. Suen praised HKBU for its effort to nurture talent for the film industry, saying that the University's contributions to Hong Kong's film sector were well recognised by society. He said he was happy to support the event for the second year and contribute to the creative industry in the Chinese-language world. Mr. Suen hoped that the winners would take forward the passion generated by the festival.

Mr. Ng See-yuen said the entries were of the highest standard. He urged students to be ready to devote themselves to the vibrant development of the Chinese film industry.

This year, three 2011 graduates of the Academy of Film won awards for their outstanding works. Lu Sainan (Master of Fine Arts in Film, Television and Digital Media) won the Best Animation Award for his film "Leng Leng". Lam See-chit (BSocSc in Communication – Cinema and Film Option) scooped the Jury's Award for a film entitled "Twenty Dollars", while Han Kunni (Master of Fine Arts in Film, Television and Digital Media) captured the Outstanding Documentary Award for her film "Tian Tong Yuan". Mr. Cheung Tung-joe (Chairman), Mr. Terry Tong, Mr. Peter Yung, Mr. Albert Cheung, Mr. Lau Shing-hon and Mr. Choi Kam-chuen formed the panel of judges. The award presenters included Mr. Liu Kai-chi, Mr. Lam Chiu-wing, Ms. Siu King-lo, Mr. Lau Tin-chi, Mr. David Chiang, Mr. Lee Lik-chee, Mr. Herman Yau, Ms. Cecelia Yip and winners of the Miss Asia 2011 and Mr. Asia 2011 titles. The award presentation ceremony will be broadcast on ATV on 12 May (Saturday) from 7:30 pm to 8:30 pm (Home Channel) and on 13 May (Sunday) from 9 pm to 10 pm (Asia Channel).
