Can students modify their choice preferences after submission of application? |
Students can modify their 1st choice preference after the publication of the second semester GPA results. A second round of interviews will be held for those who change their 1st choice preference. |
12. |
How will interview performance affect a student’s chances of being admitted to his most preferred Major/Concentration? |
Students will be invited to attend interviews conducted by programmes that are their 1st preference. During the interview, students’ motivation, aptitude and demonstrated achievements and potential in the programme area concerned will be assessed by the interview panel. |
13. |
When will the interview be held? And how will students be notified? |
Interviews will be held in late April. The Office of Admissions and Academic Advising will inform students of the interview arrangements by email. |
14. |
What will be the format of interview? |
Each Major or Concentration will decide how it will conduct the interview. |
15. |
Will the interviewing teachers favour students who have put their programme as the top choice, to the disadvantage of those who put it as their second choice? |
The following measures will be adopted in arranging and conducting the interviews: |
- The Office of Admissions and Academic Advising will be responsible for compiling the lists of applicants to various programmes;
- The lists will be arranged in alphabetical order and will not show the choice preferences of individual students;
- To help Departments/Academy to assess the suitability of individual applicants for their respective programmes from an all-round perspective, they will be provided with a full set of every student’s HKDSE results, including the grades achieved by the students in the 4 core subjects as well as all elective subjects.
- Interviewers should consider students’ performance in subjects relevant to their proposed Major/Concentration as well as their past participation and achievements in activities related to their chosen field of studies.
- Departments/Academy will send the students’ interview scores to the Office of Admissions and Academic Advising for central processing.

How are offers made? |
For each of the programmes he has applied for enrollment, a student will be given a ranking score, which will be used to determine his position on the programme’s merit order list relative to other students. The computer system will match the order of preference he has assigned to the Majors/Concentrations of his choice with the position he has been placed in the merit order list of each Major/Concentration. He will then be made an offer of the highest priority on his preference list. |
17. |
Will students be assigned a Major/Concentration not on their top five preferences? |
Assignment to a Major/Concentration is on a competitive basis, since the number of places available in each Major/Concentration may be less than the number of applicants. A student will be assigned to a Major/Concentration outside of his five choice preferences if he is not given an offer in the iteration process. To ensure a higher chance of being assigned to their desired Major/Concentration, students are advised to consider their abilities, aspirations and the popularity of different Majors/Concentrations.
The Major Assignment Scheme is expected to accommodate the preferences of a majority of students. For the small number of students who may not be assigned to their top preferences, we believe that the best way of assigning them to an appropriate Major/Concentration would be through individual consultation. |

Can students reject an offer? |
The offers students receive are their best possible offer. If students are dissatisfied with their offer results, they can lodge an appeal. All appeals will be handled by an Appeals Panel, which comprises the Associate Dean, Department heads and the Academic Advisor. Clearing round offers will be announced before the end of July.
An appeal may be made on the following grounds only:
- that there had been a material administrative error or procedural irregularity in the assignment process;
- that the students’ aptitude and potential have not been adequately taken into consideration in the assignment process.
19. |
What should students do if they have to submit an appeal? |
The following procedures will be adopted in handling appeals:
- A student who wants to lodge an appeal should fill in an Appeals Form provided by the Office of Admissions and Academic Advising, giving full reasons for the appeal. The form, together with documents that the student wants to be considered in the appeal process, should be submitted to the Office of Admissions and Academic Advising within one week of the announcement of the offer results.
- On receiving an appeal, the Office of Admissions and Academic Advising will pass it on to the Appeals Panel.
- The Panel shall review each appeal and determine if there is a prima facie case for a reconsideration of the Major assignment result concerned.
- If the Panel determines that an appeal does not have a prima facie case, then it will be rejected. If the Panel determines that an appeal has a prima facie case, then a hearing will be conducted at which the student and other relevant persons, including members of the teaching and academic staff, will be invited to present their case.
- After considering the presentations by the student appellant and other relevant persons, the Panel may:
- Reject an appeal, in which case the student will be given reasons for the decision; or
- Accept an appeal, in which case the original Major offer will be revoked and the student will be allocated to another Major deemed appropriate by the Panel.
- At the conclusion of the appeals procedures, students who have lodged an appeal will each be issued a letter informing them of the result of their appeal.
- The amended assignment results will be incorporated in the clearing round offer results.
- Students who are dissatisfied with the Panel’s decision over their appeal may take their case to the Dean in writing, giving full reasons. The Dean shall review the case and make a final decision.
