Dear Communication Buddies,

In 2019, we went through an unexpectedly challenging time in Hong Kong. Throughout, we tried to maintain our proud tradition of inclusivity and mutual respect for a diverse society. The new semester brings much to look forward to.

Having successfully launched the Master of Science in AI and Digital Media programme last year, it is with great anticipation and excitement that we are now recruiting for “Acting for Global Screen”, a unique international and interdisciplinary “state-of-the-art” Bachelor of Fine Arts programme to be launched in the 2020/21 academic year. We will also be offering a new double degree, comprising a HKBU Bachelor of Communication (Honours) plus a Bachelor of Communication/Journalism conferred by The University of Queensland.

Internationalisation is vital to the growth of our School. We have been expanding the global footprint of our students and faculty, with our first study tours to Rwanda last year. Earlier this month, more than 400 undergraduate and postgraduate students participated in six overseas study tours: learning about advanced technology startups in Israel, attending film training workshops in the UK, observing and reporting on the Taiwan's presidential and legislative elections, meeting journalists and media practitioners in the Czech Republic and France, and studying digital television developments in Italy.

There is no greater satisfaction than seeing our alumni and students succeed, like when the prestigious Golden Horse Awards and Kam Fan HK4As Students’ Award were picked up by our alumni and students last year.

The School is making sustained efforts to ensure our teaching stays abreast of the latest industry developments, by hosting regular film master classes, along with academic events in public relations and advertising, and journalism, such as the Pulitzer Prize Winners Workshop and the Journalism Fellowship Scheme. On the back of the overwhelming success of our first Global University Film Awards (GUFA) in 2018, we will be running the second GUFA in April this year, with 2,500 entries from more than 100 countries and regions. A Leadership Conference will also be held this year.

Our School is grateful to all the former Deans/Heads for laying a solid foundation for the School’s sustained development. “LNT Scholarship for Film Studies” and “LNT Foundation for Film Art Research” was set up last year, to recognise Dr. Lin Nien-tung’s contributions to our School and the field of film studies.

We would like to express our sincere gratitude to our alumni and the industry for your ample support throughout the year. As the Year of the Rat arrives, we wish you a happy, healthy and fulfilling year!
