HKBU School of Communication hosts 50th Anniversary Gala Dinner
Mr Raymond R Wong and Professor Leonard Chu conferred the Lifetime Achievement Award for Journalism and Communication Education



The School of Communication of Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) held a gala dinner last Friday (30 November). Over 400 guests including government officials, representatives from local and overseas institutions and industries, members of the HKBU senior management, alumni, faculty, staff and students participated in this joyous event to celebrate the School’s Golden Jubilee. The Lifetime Achievement Award for Journalism and Communication Education was conferred upon former head Mr Raymond Wong and former dean Professor Leonard Chu. Moreover, the Distinguished Communication Alumni Award was presented to 22 distinguished alumni for their professional achievements and significant contributions to society, the industry and their alma mater.
The distinguished guests included The Honorable Mrs Carrie Lam, Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, Mr Cheng Yan-kee and Mr Andrew Yao Cho-fai, HKBU Chairman and Deputy Chairman of HKBU Council and Court, Professor Roland Chin, HKBU President, Dr Daniel Tse, President Emeritus, Prof Ng Ching-fai, former President, Ms May Chan, Member of the Court, and Dr Amen Ng, Chair of the Communication Alumni Association.

In her congratulatory remarks, the Guest of Honour Mrs Carrie Lam acclaimed the School for its remarkable contributions to Hong Kong’s media and communication field, as well as the creative industries. She was impressed by the School’s international vision and aspiration to serve as the leading school of communication in Asia for the world.
Professor Roland Chin shared the story of the years of endeavours of the School. He paid special tribute to the School’s founding leaders and heads: Professor Timothy Yu, Mr Raymond R Wong, Mr Chang Kuo-sin and Dr Lin Nien-tung for laying a solid foundation for the School. Professor Huang Yu expressed that the School will continue to uphold its motto “Truth is Virtue” and lead the School forward.
During the dinner, the School conferred the Lifetime Achievement Award for Journalism and Communication Education upon Mr Raymond Wong and Professor Leonard Chu in the highest honour of their contributions to the development of Hong Kong’s journalism and communication field.

Mr Raymond R Wong
As one of the most respected journalists, Mr Raymond R Wong dedicated his life to the service of Hong Kong through his journalism profession. As a role-model of Hong Kong’s journalism and broadcasting industries, Mr Wong had nurtured countless communication professionals over the years. His lasting contributions to the development of Hong Kong’s journalism field have established his strong reputation in the communication and education sectors, extending his influence throughout Hong Kong.

Professor Leonard Chu
With an international reputation as a renowned communication scholar, Professor Leonard Chu has taught at universities in our region and beyond for 40 years. He has played a major role in bringing together the academic study of communication in Hong Kong, Taiwan and Mainland China. He is highly regarded as a patriarch in the academic field of communication and journalism.

Furthermore, the Distinguished Communication Alumni Award was presented to 22 distinguished alumni for their professional achievements and significant contributions to society, the industry and their alma mater. The awardees are from various fields such as film, public relations, advertising, journalism, social enterprises, education and so on. The School presented the Distinguished Communication Alumni Award once again since its 40th anniversary in 2008. The School also presented the 6th Chang Kuo-sin Awards for Aspiring Young Communicators in recognition of the outstanding performance of 19 young communicators in the categories of Journalism, Audio-Visual Production and Commentary. The Award is to commemorate the various branches of Chang Kuo-sin's career, and has expanded its scale to seven categories this year.
