Academy of Film Seeds Project holds Awards Gala

The “INNO-Action! HKBU Academy of Film Seeds Project” (“Seeds Project”) held a ceremony today (12 July) to present 16 awards to winners of its 5th Digital Short Video Competition. The Best Drama Award went to The Hedgehog Girl submitted by Carmel Secondary School, and Lau Wing-man who played the character of The Hedgehog Girl won the Best Actor Award. International Christian School of Hong Kong’s entry Anomie was named The Best Documentary and The 5th Anniversary Best Documentary. The list of winners is enclosed.

Today’s award presentation ceremony was officiated by Mr Ng Chi-keung, Executive Director, Youth.gov.hk, Efficiency Unit, HKSAR Government; Mr Man Shu-sum, Associate Director of the Academy of Film, School of Communication, Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU); film director Mr Tong Kay-ming; film director and scriptwriter Mr Au Man-kit; and film director, scriptwriter and actress Ms Mo Lai Yan-chi, who sat on the Adjudication Panel of The 5th Digital Short Video Competition.

Speaking at the Awards Gala, Mr Man said that the fifth edition of the Seeds Project attracted more than 1,000 students from over 100 secondary schools to participate in its various activities. The Digital Short Video Competition, one of the highlights of the Seeds Project, received a total of 110 submissions, with encouraging standard this year. He specially thanked teachers and students of the participating secondary schools, and also individuals and organisations that have supported the Seeds Project, including instructors, members of the Adjudication Panel, and staff and students of the Academy of Film of the School of Communication of HKBU. He also expressed his gratitude to the sponsor, Create Hong Kong of the HKSAR Government, and supporting organisations for their generous support which contributed to the success of the fifth edition of the Seeds Project. Mr Man added, “We will continue our efforts to cultivate more talents who aspire to a career in Hong Kong’s creative industries.”

The 5th Digital Short Video Competition attracted entries from 62 secondary schools with 89 dramas and 21 documentaries competing for 10 drama awards, four documentary awards and two special awards newly added to mark the 5th anniversary (5th Anniversary Best Drama, 5th Anniversary Best Documentary). An adjudication panel, formed by Mr Tong Kay-ming, Mr Au Man-kit; and Ms Mo Lai Yan-chi, selected the winners of the 14 awards, while winners of the remaining two awards, namely Most Popular Online Drama and Most Popular Online Documentary, were determined by public online voting.

Guests who presented the awards at today’s ceremony included five officiating guests as well as veterans in the film and TV sectors, namely Mr Pao Wai-chung, Mr Chung Yau-tim, Mr Pon Hung-yiu, Mr Mak Chun-hung, Mr Lan Kin-hung, and three young and emerging artists, Mr Yau Hawk-sau, Mr Ho Kai-wa, Mr Paco Wong and Ms YoYo Fung.

The “Meeting with Judges” was held immediately after the award ceremony with directors Mr Tong Kay-ming, Mr Au Man-kit and Ms Mo Lai Yan-chi who shared with the students their insights into creativity and their experiences in the creative industries.

“INNO-Action! HKBU Academy of Film Seeds Project” is a project that specialises in training secondary school students’ creativity. It was initiated and developed by the Academy of Film of the School of Communication of HKBU and Youth.gov.hk, and has been sponsored by Create Hong Kong of the HKSAR Government since the project’s first edition. The Digital Short Video Competition of the Seeds Project aims to nurture young students’ creativity and potential through creative filmmaking.
