Academy of Film lecturer selected as Oscar judge

Mr Poon Hang-sang, Lecturer of the Academy of Film of the School of Communication, was one of only three Hong Kong representatives invited by The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to join the Oscar’s board of judges in 2016.

A film industry veteran, Mr Poon has been filming since the 1980s and received the award for Best Cinematography from various film festivals. This invitation is on account of two of his productions, namely Ip Man 2: Legend of the Grandmaster and Kung Fu Hustle. He said, “When I received the email invitation I was calm, while my family and friends congratulated me excitedly and the media immediately invited me for an interview. I regard this invitation to be on the Oscar’s board of judges as a recognition of all Hong Kong film makers; it is an honour for the past, present and the future efforts in driving competition and progress in the sector.”

As an alumnus of HKBU, Mr Poon attributes this glory to the University. He stated, “It is not my glory, it is the glory of my alma mater.”

As a lecturer of the Academy of Film, Mr Poon will try his very best to enrich students’ abilities and techniques with his own experience so that they may contribute to the future of the film industry. He hopes to see more graduates of the University making a mark in the international arena.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the organiser of the Oscar, has announced this year’s invitation list of Oscar jury members. Of the 683 new invitees, three are from Hong Kong, all of whom are renowned cinematographers. For more details, please visit http://oscars.org/news/academy-invites-683-membership.
