UNICEF ambassador for Japan Dr Agnes Chan shares on helping children in conflict zones

Dr Agnes Chan, the UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador for Japan, was invited by the Institute of Creativity and the School of Communication to give a public talk on “Listen to the small voices of the world” at HKBU on 12 May.

At the event, Dr Chan shared her valuable experience in helping children in 17 conflict-ridden areas since she took up the post of UNICEF ambassador in 1985. She said from these voyages she learned that theory alone could not solve a problem, one must practise what one preaches, and do the best one can, regardless of the impact one can make towards solving the problem.

Dr Agnes Chan was a famous pop singer in Hong Kong and Japan in the 1970s and 1980s. She migrated to Japan after her marriage, and obtained a BS degree in Psychology from the University of Toronto, Canada, and a PhD in Education from Stanford University in the US. Dr Chan teaches at universities in Japan and has written a number of prose works and novels. She has been concerned about children’s and women’s issues around the world and helped uplift the social status of women in Japan. She will be teaching at the School of Communication as a visiting professor in the coming academic year.

The talk was sponsored by the Hung Hin Shiu Charitable Foundation.
