Journalism alumni shine at the SOPA 2019 Awards


Two journalism alumni from the School of Communication clinched prizes at the recent Society of Publishers in Asia (SOPA) 2019 Awards with their outstanding news stories.

Ms Iris Yang, a 2017 graduate from the Master of Arts in International Journalism Studies programme, won the Award for Excellence in the Reporting on the Environment category. Her award-winning story revealed that the improper planning and development of petrochemical plants in the Quan Gang district, which is located in the Fujian Province on the Mainland, has caused serious health and environmental pollution problems.

Ms Michelle Chan, a 2017 graduate from the International Journalism Bachelor’s degree programme in the Department of Journalism, received the Scoop Award for a joint report entitled “A milestone in China’s chipmaking plan”. This news report was the first to disclose a new joint venture project in China involving an influential British chip technology provider and its Chinese partners.
