Communication Scholar Receives Arthur W. Page Center Research Grant for Cross-National CSR/CSV Project

Dr. Yi-Ru Regina Chen, Assistant Professor of Communication Studies of the School of Communication, recently receives the 2016/2017 Page and Johnson Legacy Scholar Grant awarded by the Arthur W. Page Center in the United States for her cross-national study entiltled “Transforming CSR: Creating shared value, trust and perceived CEO quality in the US, Germany and China”. As one of the six funded projects, the pioneer study explores the power of leadership in maximizing business impact on society through creating shared values (CSV) - a concept introduced by Michael Porter (Harvard) in 2011.

Research and public polls have consistently shown that the public believes business can simultaneously increase profits and improve economic and social conditions in the community in which they operate. They increasely demand for corproate effort in solving problems or challenges resulting from rapid enomonic, enviornmental, and social changes. To respond to the demand, competitive business needs to translate its social purpose into a real social impact that lasts for a long term. The question is how to effectively do it.
The funded study will answer the question by empirically comparing the effect of CSV and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives on public trust in corporations and in CEOs. The study will also identify the CEO characteristics and competencies perceived by the public that facilitate effective CSV. The results enable public relations/communication professionals to better consult the top management in organizational planning of its non-market strategy for business sustainability.

To best facilitate this research initiative, Dr. Yi-Ru Regina Chen’s team includes the following members: Dr. Don Stacks, Professor of public relations and corporate communication at University of Miami, United States; Professor dr. Ansgar Zerfaß, Professor of communication management at University of Leipzig, Germany; Dr. Shannon Bowen, Professor of public relations at University of South Carolina, United States; and Dr. Flora Hung-Baesecke, Senior Lecturer of public relations at Massey University, New Zealand; and Mr. Ben Boyd, President, Practices and Sectors (overseeing the Edelman intellectual property) and Chief Executive Officer, Edelman Canada and Latin America.
