Communication scholar receives top faculty paper award

Dr Timothy Fung, Assistant Professor of Communication Studies of the School of Communication, was recently awarded the "Top Three Faculty Papers" award with his co-authored paper "Testing Links Among Uncertainty, Affect and Attitude Toward a Health Behavior in a Risky Setting" at the Annual Conference of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC), Communication Theory and Methodology Division.

Applying the Risk Information Seeking and Processing model to the case study of people's consumption of contaminated fish from the Great Lakes, Dr Fung examined how judgment under uncertainty and emotional reactions to risk influence people's risk information seeking and risk preventive behavioral intentions. The results showed that judgment under uncertainty has a strong influence on feelings of worry and anger, and that anger and fish avoidance have a positive correlation.

Dr Fung was delighted to receive the award. He thanked Professor Huang Yu, Dean of Communication, and Professor Kineta Hung, Head of Communication Studies, for their support, especially during the preparation of the research.

In addition, Dr Fung was appointed as the Newsletter Chair of the "Communicating Science, Health, Environment, and Risk Division" of AEJMC.
