HKBU student’s graduation project wins Korea-China University Film Festival award

Sun Huang (2013 Master’s degree graduate) of the Academy of Film of the School of Communication won an outstanding award at The 5th Korea-China University Film Festival for her graduation project The Only One to Lose. The competition attracted entries from students from Hong Kong, Taiwan, Mainland China, Korea and Japan.

The film Sun Huang directed was about a miserable Mainland mother who missed her deceased only son. Although she buried her son with his phone, she found comfort in calling his phone number. One day, she was shocked when somebody answered the phone. She discovered that the stranger using her son’s old phone number was a young plumber. As she saw her son’s spirit in this young man, she deliberately broke the household appliances and asked him to come repair them. When the young man realised what she was up to, he refused to work for her again. However, later when the young man, who had lost his own mother as a boy, discovered the secret of the phone number, he forgave the woman. Since then the two strangers helped to heal each other’s pain.

Sun Huang said: “This is the first award I have won. Winning the award gives me much confidence to participate in other film festivals. I would like to express my thanks to the Academy of Film. The judges hope my work would bring people’s attention to one-child families.”
