Communication students capture gold and bronze creative advertising awards

Two students from the Department of Communication Studies of the School of Communication brought honour to the University by winning gold and bronze awards in the student graphic design category of the Apple Daily Advertising Award 2012. Yeung Man-ting (Digital Graphic Communication, Year 2) scooped a gold for her advertisement of a nose-hair trimmer while Gu Xin (Digital Graphic Communication, Year 3) snatched a bronze for an Aisleep pillow advertisement.

Man-ting said the concept came from a Chinese slogan “Nose-hair can be avoided” which is a pun on the Chinese phrase: “You cannot avoid it”. Her design was simple and easy to understand. She used the Chinese character for “nose” in the design instead of a photograph of a human nose to avoid showing the unpleasant image of nose-hair. Man-ting said: “I was thrilled when I received the good news. I had been worried that the concept was conventional and the product I chose to work on would cause embarrassment. I am happy to gain recognition for my work.”

Gu Xin’s design sought to promote an Aisleep pillow. It featured three girls riding a rollercoaster. While two of them were shrieking with fear, the third was relaxing with a pillow under her neck. The slogan on the poster said: “Make you sleep at anytime and anywhere”. The advertisement delivered the message that the Aisleep pillow was so powerful that it could make people sleep anywhere, even on a rollercoaster. Gu Xin said: “I thank the organiser for its objective praise of me.”

Both students expressed thanks to Ms. Gladys Lam, Lecturer of the Department of Communication Studies, for advising them during their creative process.
