HKBU film students scoop six awards in video competition

Fourteen film students from the School of Communication scooped more than half the awards in the post-secondary category of a video competition. They showed their professional knowledge and creativity through their videos and clinched the championship, the first runner-up prize, two merit prizes, the best actor award and the best cinematography award.

Kong Ka-yiu (director), Fong Wai-yee, Yan Ho-yin, Lee Hon-kwan, Liu Sheung-yin and Chau Fong-ning (Professional Programme in Film - Higher Diploma, Year 1) won the championship for their video “The Sun in Dark Night”. Ka-yiu and Ho-yin also won the best actor and best cinematography titles respectively. Their classmates Tung Cheuk-sze (director), Fok Pui-ki and Pei Ho-yin snatched the first runner-up prize for their video “Walking in Same Step”. In addition, two teams won merit prizes: Jackson Lau and Kevin Luk (Cinema and Television, Year 1) for the video “Education” that they co-directed and Keung Boyang (director), Li Haoze and Xu Wenxia (Master of Fine Arts in Film, TV and Digital Media programme, Year 2) for their video “The Happiness of Working Hard”.

Ka-yiu said “The Sun in Dark Night” was adapted from an article he read online. Scolded by his mother, a young boy left home to wander the streets. At night, he passed an eatery but had no money for dinner. He was grateful that the eatery owner treated him to a free meal. The owner said: “You are thankful to me because I cooked you something to eat. Your mother has cooked for you for more than 20 years, you should be very grateful to her”. The owner’s words shook up the young boy who recalled happy moments with his mother and her care for him. He immediately ran home and fell into his mother’s arms. Ka-yiu said: “Stop and think, you will realise happiness is around you.”

Ka-yiu was very happy that both the film and his performance were honoured. He said: “This is the fruit of teamwork. We were busy with our classwork and had to film the video on weekends. The two awards meant a lot to me. They proved that I could strike a balance between directing and acting and do both at the same time.” Ka-yiu said the most difficult aspect of making the video was to find an eatery at which they could film. They also had to shoot their film overnight and go to class the next day. In addition, due to bad weather in May and June, they had to wait on location for several days before filming the sunset scene. He gave a big thumbs up to producer Wai-yee for her preparation work which enabled the filming process to go smoothly.
