HKBU Mandarin Debate Team wins runner-up prize at RTHK Joint-University Mandarin Debate Competition

The HKBU Student Union Mandarin Debate Team recently won the runner-up prize at the Joint-University Mandarin Debate Competition organized by RTHK Putonghua Channel, after winning four preliminaries in October and November. Chen Zhe (Chinese Journalism, Year 1), Meng Jiacong (BBA, Year 1) and Chen Zihan (Biology, Year 2) were named Best Debater in three out of the four preliminaries.

The motion for the final between HKBU (proposing) and Chinese University of Hong Kong (opposing) was "Does it do more good than harm for Hong Kong and Mainland China to integrate rapidly?" Meng Jiacong, Chen Zhe, Li Zihan (Biology, Year 1) and Leung Yin-juen (Chinese Study, Year 2) represented HKBU in the final.

Team leader Chen Zhe said: "We are excited about the outstanding results. The topic challenged us to conduct an in-depth analysis of the strategic relationship between Hong Kong and Mainland China." Chan Zhe added that the team was inspired by the comments of the judges which have encouraged them to prepare for future competitions through teamwork and cooperation.
