Alumni - Tammy FOO, 2004

Everyone has his own dreams, but how many people in the world can make their dreams come true? Tammy Foo, an alumnus we interviewed this time, always dreamed to be a copywriter, so she chose Public Relations and Advertising as her major. After her graduation, she was soon hired by an advertising firm and she finally realized her dream.

Tammy is a graduate of year 2004 from Public Relations and Advertising option of School of Communication, Hong Kong Baptist University. Once she was graduated, she was told by her friends that there was a job vacancy in a small scale advertising company, Comma, a firm which mainly does print advertisement and packaging. She regarded it as a precious opportunity as she knew that it would be a stepping- stone to her future career. She smiled and said “ It was really a great start, I became more experienced after being a copywriter in Comma for one year.”

However, after some time, she discovered that she was just doing repeating jobs, and it was not as challenging as she expected before. It was a great disappointment to her. Since she could no longer tolerate this kind of dull life, she quitted her job with no doubt. Accidentally, she saw a recruitment of Tribal DDB in Media Magazine, she applied it immediately as it is the firm she yearns to work in for years. Now, she is working as a copywriter in Tribal DDB which mainly helps firms to do on- line advertising.

In fact, she had once applied for the same post. However she was not hired due to her inexperience. It tells us that working experience is vital because it determines whether we can successfully get the job.

When we talked about her work life now, she told us delightedly that she enjoys her job a lot. Though others believed that people working in PRA industry lead a
hectic life, she holds different views and she is satisfied about her current situation. She regards online- advertising as an interesting way to communicate, since she needs to design the online- banner advertisement. It has far more fun compare with the traditional advertisement. McDonald’s summer dessert and the collection of Kittybrick are examples of her online advertising campaign. Besides, she indicated that her job is not very stressful since her working hours is not tremendously long. Also, working overtime is not often needed, which is quite relaxing in comparison with people who work in other advertising firms.

Making balance between work life and personal life is important, and Tammy can surely achieve this goal. When she has heavy workload, she brings her work back home so that she won’t stay in office for long hours. During her free days, she does not do anything related to her work. She reads books and avoids turning on her computer because her job requires her to face computer all the time. Her hobby is reading, especially reading those about media and advertising. Actually, another reason for Tammy to nurture the hobby of reading is that, it helps her to attain worldwide information. She pointed out that curiosity is of great importance since we need to be aware of things happened around them.

Now, advertising industry is in fierce competition, so Tammy highly recommended all PRA students to be well- prepared to step into the cruel society. She has a motto of her own, “ read more, learn more and know more” She also reminded us that internship will be useful to our future career as it allows us to experience more and know more about the industry.

After interviewing Tammy, we understood that working in PRA field is a difficult task. Tammy repeatedly reminded us “never give up when we encounter difficulties, learn to compromise with the other colleague”
