Fan, Yuk Fan CHAN, a PRA graduate in 2004, is now working in JCDecaux as the Senior Customer Service Executive. This was her first job after graduation. She told us that JCDecaux was one of the world’s leading outdoor advertising companies and the company has offices in many places around the world including Hong Kong and the mainland. She mainly handles the outdoor media in the mainland China. In order to keep track with the most updating advertising trend in the mainland, she frequently had meetings with her colleagues in the mainland’s office. Besides, she needed to follow the production and sometimes she had to draft the advertising or sales proposals.
She considered her work less demanding than her friends working in other advertising agencies. She said she would be very busy only when there were holidays in the mainland while most of the time, she managed to finish her work and left the office at around 7-8 p.m.
We then asked if Fan found her job interesting or not, she said she did not have any special feeling towards her job indeed, but she did have a memorable experience, About a year ago, one of her clients requested to use a very special golden material to make an ad. The client insisted that the main color of his ad must be golden. ‘You know? Ad in golden color is very difficult to be printed well. Our team therefore had to go through a lot of color tests and proofs in order to meet the requirement.’ Fan recalled. ‘We kept working day and night. Eventually, our product looks gorgeous and our client was satisfied.’
After Fan has shared her experience with us, we asked her of she managed to make a balance between work life and personal life. She laughed and told us again she really thought she was enjoying her life every day.
As we are still Year 1 students and we do not have a very clear picture of what PRA is and how our future career will be, we then ask Fan to tell us more about what we should do at this stage. ‘Be active and play more!’ Fan said. She thought we should participate in more activities as well as study hard. During her first year in the university, she actively participated in TYA’s activities and various clubs’ activities. When she was Year 3, she became the leader of PRA Tiger team and organized a lot of TYA’s activities. ‘I remember we held a fashion show for a company when I was in Year 3. It was so remarkable because we had to run the whole function on our own. We needed to contact different press and celebrities to come to our show. Some of our classmates had cat-walk on the runway. It was such a large project and we did lots of preparation work. We were all exhausted as we wanted to be a brilliant one. Eventually, it really was!’
Fan emphasized that we should ‘Work hard, play hard.’ As play should follow work, she told us what we should pay most effort to, still, was study. She said that we should read more books related to our subjects and then think more instead of just reciting the contents. Besides, she noticed us to pay more attention to the specific terms appeared in the PRA textbooks as we might apply them in our future career.
