Alumni - Cat LAI, 2003

Cat Lai graduated in 2003, the year of SARS outbreak. It was difficult to find job during that period of tie. But Cat was the lucky one. She was recruited by a research company, Synovate. She stayed in Synovate for about 1 year before moving to her present job.

Now, Cat is working as a Senior Client Service Executive in AS Nielsen, a renowned research company. Besides the new working environment, the job was totally new for her. She was a qualitative researcher who has to conduct survey for their clients, as well as analyze the data. She made a smooth transition.

Her first task in AC Nielsen was to translate a document for her director. She forgot to save the file and all the work just disappeared. She had to work overnight to do it again. But she said it was a very interesting experience and it was lucky that she was not fired because of this. Cat never finds her job bored. Of course, she often finds some difficult time in her work. For a Client Service Executive, it is not only to work with data and numbers, but also work with their clients. Sometimes when the finding is not the same as clients’ expectation, their job is not only to present the analysis to them, but to sort out the solutions for the problems. Most importantly, they would never change the data to satisfy their clients.

Cat loves her job, her partners and her company, but she is definitely not a workaholic. She balances her working life and personal life well. Although she is very busy she never brings the work home. She would work until 9pm in the office to finish her job in weekdays and takes break in weekends. She goes to the church on Saturdays and spends the whole Sunday with her family. Besides, she plays piano and guitar in her spare time. She had just finished her flute class right before the interview. ’Playing music is really a very good way to relax,’ she says. One thing she wants to emphasize is that we must enjoy ourselves no matter in our work or our studies, always try to do something you really like.

There is true that working in Hong Kong is stressful and tense. We always encounter difficulties in our lives. All we have to do is to stay positive and be an optimist when we face any obstacles, just like what Cat did.
